The WR-960
The WR-960 is a 3-row 8-step analog step sequencer. Twenty-four knobs (three per step) produce three simultaneous CV outputs (A, B, C) at 0-10 V, plus eight V-trig gate outputs - one per column, high while that column is active. An internal LFO clock advances the steps with a SLOW / FAST range switch covering 0.05 Hz (drone-paced) up past 400 Hz (audio-rate, where the sequencer becomes a strange wavetable). External clock and reset inputs lock the sequencer to other modules.
Each step has a 3-position mode switch: SKIP removes the step from the cycle, NORMAL plays it, STOP halts the sequencer until a reset, jump, or shift. Each step also exposes a jump gate input - patch a V-trig in to leap directly to that step, bypassing the clock - and panel SHFT / RST / JUMP momentary buttons let the sequencer step, restart, or jump by hand without patching anything.
A C>CLK switch on the front panel routes the active step's row-C voltage into the clock rate (±2 octaves across the 0-10 V row-C range), giving per-step timing variation - the row-C-into-clock-rate self-patch baked into a single switch. Each row also has a range scalar (X1 / X2 / X4) for compressing a row to 0-5 V or 0-2.5 V for finer knob resolution on tight pitch sequences. A CYCLE output pulses on each sequence restart for chaining WR-960s into longer patterns; a CLK OUT jack forwards the active clock pulse to drive an envelope without unplugging the rate source.
The WR-960
The WR-960 has 24 row knobs (eight per row at 0-10 V), eight per-step SKIP / NORMAL / STOP mode switches, a RATE knob (0.05 Hz - 400 Hz, exponential), a RANGE switch (SLOW makes the rate 10x slower, FAST is the audio-rate ceiling), a RUN toggle, a C>CLK switch that routes row-C into the clock rate at ±2 octaves of modulation, three per-row range scalars (RA / RB / RC: X1 / X2 / X4), and three momentary panel buttons (SHFT, RST, JUMP). Inputs: CLK (external clock overrides the internal LFO when patched), RST, RT CV (1 V/Oct modulation of the internal LFO), and eight per-step jump gate inputs (J1 ... J8). Outputs: three row CVs, eight column V-trigs at 10 V, plus CLK and CYC. SKIP-mode steps fall out of the advance loop; STOP-mode halts until a reset or shift.
In a patch
The WR-960 is a source of structure - it sits upstream of voices, generators, and effects. A typical patch: row A out into the V/oct of a WR-921, row B out into the CV-1 of a WR-904A, row C out into the FCV of a WR-902 for amplitude accent, the CLK OUT (or any column gate) into the WR-911 GATE input. Patch the WR-921's saw through the WR-904A through the WR-902 into an output and the result is an eight-note loop with per-step timbre and accent.
Per-column gates open up rhythmic patterning. Drop WR-911 envelopes off col-1 and col-5 instead of every step for a half-time accent pattern; route different columns into different modules and one column fires a kick, another opens a filter, a third advances a WR-962 to a new waveform. Chain two WR-960s with the CYCLE output of one driving the RST of the other for 16-step patterns. A WR-961 between a column gate and an S-trig envelope handles legacy trigger conventions.
Per-step jump inputs let you address specific notes from outside. A WR-962 advancing on a clock can pick which step the WR-960 jumps to, turning a fixed pattern into a polyrhythmic call-and-response. Random CV into a quantizer into a jump input adds controlled randomness without throwing the loop away.
Inputs
- CLK (gate) — External clock input. When patched, replaces the internal LFO and the WR-960 advances on each rising V-trig edge.
- RST (gate) — Reset input. V-trig rising edge jumps back to step 1.
- RT (cv) — Rate CV input (1 V/oct). Modulate the internal LFO. Self-patch row C here for humanised swing.
Outputs
- A (cv) — Row A CV output. Shows the current row-A knob value.
- B (cv) — Row B CV output.
- C (cv) — Row C CV output.
- CLK (gate) — Forwarded clock pulse (~1 ms on each step advance). Patch into a WR-961 column-B input for a fixed-length S-trig, or chain multiple WR-960s.
- CYC (gate) — Cycle / restart pulse. Fires each time the sequencer wraps back to step 1. Use to reset a longer pattern, or chain WR-960s.
Controls
- Rate — Internal LFO rate. Exponential 0.05 Hz - 400 Hz.
- Range — SLOW drops the rate by 10x (drone / slow patterns); FAST is normal sequencer range.
- Run — Run / stop the internal clock. Does not affect external-clock mode.
- C>CLK — When ON, the active step's row-C voltage modulates the internal clock rate (+/-2 octaves across the 0-10 V row-C range). Bakes in the "humanised sequence" trick without needing a self-patch.
- SHFT — Manual SHIFT button. Press to advance one step (works even on STOP steps). Useful for hand-stepping.
- RST — Manual RESET button. Press to jump sequencer to step 1 immediately.
- JUMP — Manual step-select buttons (one per step). Press to leap to that step.
- Row A Range — Row A range scalar. X1 = full 0-10 V, X2 = 0-5 V, X4 = 0-2.5 V. Narrower ranges give finer knob resolution. Click the indicator next to the A label to cycle.
- Row B Range — Row B range scalar. Same X1/X2/X4 options as row A.
- Row C Range — Row C range scalar. Also scales the ROW-C -> CLOCK modulation depth when C>CLK is on.
